Join Congressional Electrics effort to save energy and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Pledge to switch at least one incandescent bulb in your home with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb.
If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb, the savings would be equivalent to lighting more than three million homes for a whole year and reducing carbon emissions equivalent to getting 800,000 vehicles off the road.!
Take the ENERGY STAR
pledge now and help change the world!
Just remember when you dispose of CFL’s to take them a facility that recycles them. CFL’s do contain a small amount of mercury, about the size of a ballpoint pen. Since they do contain a small amount of mercury we need to make sure they are disposed of properly. Both Montgomery County and Prince Georges county landfills both accept CFL’s. If a CFL bulb breaks while installing or removing a CFL, the amount of mercury released can evaporate into the air where it will likely remain at an amount below the safety standards set by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration.
